Altoona Economy & Business:
From farmland and small towns, Altoona grew into a major center of commerce when the railroad tracks were located through Altoona. Although still an important route through the Allegheny Mountains for Norfolk Southern, the construction and use of the highway system after World War II shifted the economy of Altoona.
